Mediterranean

Fewer crowds and comfortable, warm, sunny weather, make May-June and September-October the best times to head for the Med. Most of the Mediterranean beach club resorts open around May 4 and from then on there are good pickings for cheap deals on departures and returns before May 25.

For those wanting to travel earlier in the season, March through to the end of April is ideal for Morocco, Greece, Italy, Slovenia and Turkey. And Cyprus and Malta are lovely in April.

Tip: for great value and a host of destinations in one vacation, consider a Med cruise. Departing Savona in Italy in September 2013, a seven-day trip on board Costa Favolosa costs from as little as $749 per person and takes in Barcelona and Palma de Majorca (Spain), Valletta (Malta), Catania (Sicily) and Naples (Italy).

Caribbean

In late spring and autumn, the weather in the Caribbean is warm with little rainfall, but the islands are less busy than in winter months. You can expect temperatures with average lows in the mid-70s to average highs in the mid-80s.

One of the great advantages to travelling in the shoulder season is that travellers can usually get a discount on accommodation because there is less demand for hotel rooms. The exceptions during shoulder season are Easter and spring break, when family tourism picks up.

Tip: Apple Vacations is offering reduced rates at top Caribbean resorts during peak summer travel dates - three nights all-inclusive on Cancun’s Riviera Maya from $749 (seven nights from $1,029), including round trip airfare.

US hot spots

Spring (March to early May) is a marvellous time to visit California as temperatures are comfortable throughout much of the state. During these months, you'll also encounter shorter queues and better deals: many of the state's top tourist attractions are still operating at a slower pace and hotels often charge low-season rates until June. California's desert areas are much more pleasant during spring than they are during the scorching heat of summer.

Autumn (September through November) is another good time to beat the crowds, and can be an especially beautiful time to see Northern California and the state's wine regions. San Francisco, often shrouded in fog in summer, sees some of its sunniest days during its "Indian Summer," which generally lasts for September and October.

With the possible exception of July and August (unless you like heat and humidity), any time is the right time to go to New Orleans. During Mardi Gras, though, it's hard to get a hotel room and it can also be difficult during the various music festivals throughout the year, especially the Jazz & Heritage Festival.

One of the best times to visit is December. The town sparkles with decorations, there are all kinds of holiday special events, the weather is pleasant – but, for some reason, tourists become scarce. Hotels lower their rates and most restaurants are so empty that you can walk in just about anywhere without a reservation.

Although Myrtle Beach can boast 215 sunny days per year, peak travel season is considered March 1 to September 30. However, October and early November are favourites for canny golfers who take advantage of lower hotel occupancy rates, comfortable temperatures, world-class dining and entertainment.
